American Staffordshire Terrier: History, Characteristics, Education and Cost

History

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a descendant of dogs used for fighting games in Great Britain. Its ancestors fought in packs against bulls, bears, or alone against other dogs.

The ancestor of the American Staffordshire Terrier was born from a cross between the English Bulldog and Terrier-type dogs. The Bulldog brought its powerful jaw and stocky build, while the Terrier brought its liveliness and fire.

This dog then arrived in America in the 1800s. There, breeders created a larger version of the breed. The English and smaller version took the name Staffordshire Bull Terrier, while the American one took the name American Staffordshire Terrier.

Physical

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a medium-sized dog. It weighs between 25 and 30 kg. Females measure 43 to 45 cm, and males 45 to 48 cm.

The Amstaff has a short, hard, and shiny coat. Its coat can be of any color. It can be single-colored, variegated, or multi-colored. However, in the standard defined by the FCI, coats that are more than 80% white or black and tan should be avoided.

He has a broad, rounded skull. His cheek muscles are well defined. His ears are short and half-erect. As for his eyes, they are rounded and dark in color.

The Amstaff has a strong bone structure and a muscular body, especially in the chest area. Its tail is short and carried horizontally.

Character

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a calm and gentle dog who will be loyal and affectionate with his owners. He has no reason to develop aggression unless he is not treated correctly. It is necessary to take care to socialize him early so that he does not become suspicious of strangers. In any case, he will remain a good guard dog due to his protective nature.

It is an independent dog, which tolerates solitude and the absence of its master well.

The Amstaff is a very intelligent dog. He will be more receptive to training if his physical exercise needs are met. The American Staffordshire Terrier must be educated and socialized at a very young age. Rules must be established and respected in order to give a clear framework to your canine. You must be gentle and use positive reinforcement so that he assimilates the orders.

As for housing, it adapts very well to life in an apartment, as in a house. However, it will appreciate having a garden where it can have fun and exercise as it pleases. Especially since in public places, outings must be done on a leash and with a muzzle. This breed is listed among category 2 dogs (guard and defense dogs).

The Amstaff is a sporty dog with a lot of energy. It is essential to offer him long outings where he can maintain his muscles. The practice of a dog sport is recommended. This dog is also fond of play sessions. A point of vigilance, however: the activity of the American Staffordshire Terrier must not be too intense during his puppy year. Otherwise he risks developing joint problems as well as problems with his balance.

Health

The American Staffordshire Terrier has a life expectancy of between 12 and 14 years. It is a resilient, healthy dog with very few hereditary diseases.

However, this breed is prone to cerebellar abiotrophy. This is a nervous disease due to a degeneration of the cells of the cerebellum. The dog can then suffer from tremors, and its movements are affected.

Also, like all medium- to large dogs, the Amstaff can suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia. These issues are more likely to develop if the dog was involved in too much strenuous activity as a puppy.

To protect yourself from these risks and insure your companion in the event of health problems, we recommends dog insurance.

Interview

The American Staffordshire Terrier requires very little maintenance, thanks to its short coat. Weekly brushing is sufficient. You can use a glove or a soft bristled brush for this. Bathing should only be done on rare occasions in order to preserve the health and protective role of the coat.

The rest of the maintenance concerns teeth, eyes, ears, and nails, as with any other breed.

Teeth should be brushed regularly to remove bacteria and tartar that build up.

If your Amstaff does not wear down his nails enough, they will need to be cut. To do this, do not hesitate to ask a veterinarian for advice. The claws are irrigated by blood vessels, and it is important to be careful when cutting them.

Finally, ears and eyes should be monitored and cleaned to prevent them from becoming infected. Physiological serum can be applied to the eyes using a compress. As for the ears, it will be necessary to choose a suitable lotion.

Price

Expect to pay between 500 and 1000 euros to buy an American Staffordshire Terrier. This cost varies depending on the breeders and the pedigree of the animal.
